Sailing, A Video to Illustrate Dermatographia

January 5, 2014 • 2

Have you ever wondered what dermatographia looks like as it appears and then disappears? Well now you can see it firsthand! I made this video to illustrate the process:

First I start with a template (since the drawing takes a few minutes to appear, it’s hard to see what I’m doing without a template). This particular design is sails repeating to form a pattern. Hence the title of the video, Sailing.

Then I use my dull plastic knitting needle to trace the template design (this does not hurt at all, it’s just a light scratch). Lastly, I wait for the image to appear! And voilà, a temporary skin drawing.

Please share your own skin drawings and/or videos. Send to arianapage@ gmail. com and I’ll post them here on Skin Tome. Thanks!

About Ariana

Hi, I'm Ariana (pronounced Air-e-anna, like banana ;)!
I'm an artist and the founder of Skintome. I have dermatographia (aka skin writing), a condition that hyper-sensitizes the skin to touch, stress, diet, and chemicals. I've been making art inspired by my dermatographia for 14 years. And in doing so, have spread the word about the condition, how to treat it naturally, and how to see the beauty in it.

Hi, I am a 62 yr old Grandma. I was just diagnosed with this , have had it for eight months now, and Rheumatoid Arthrits. I have had thryoid (hypo) for yrs. I watch my four grandchildren, ages 11, 7, 4, and 1 1/2. The grandchildren think it’s great that they can write on me like a doodle board.it is so nice to see other people’s ways of dealing with it.
